Children's Occupational Therapists (OT) within the Children and Young People's Disability Team.
Who the service is for:
We see children and young people from 0-18 years with a disability which affects their activities of daily living in the home who live within the boundary of Wiltshire Council.
The children and young people may have difficulty with things like:
- getting into or around the home
- sitting independently
- moving on or off the bed, toilet, bath or a chair
- staying safe at home
What we do:
We focus on the home through assessing the child or young person's abilities with daily activities. We provide support, equipment or adaptations to increase their independence, reduce risk and maximise their developmental potential. For example:
- providing advice and information
- loans of specialist equipment to assist daily activities such as beds, toileting equipment, shower seats, bathing seats.
- assessment and provision of specialist seating to meet complex postural needs
- a moving and handling assessment, including provision of suitable equipment such as a hoist and slings supported with a moving and handling plan
- minor adaptations such as grab rails, stair rails
- adaptations and equipment to support staying safe at home where standard options have not worked, for example (LINK)
- Major adaptations through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) such as permanent ramping, stairlifts, through floor lifts, accessible bathrooms and altering existing rooms Introduction
- supporting re-housing if your home is not suitable to adapt
Home safety advice:
Challenging behaviour can put the safety of a child or other people at risk and reduce quality of life. Ensuring a safe home environment is one of a parent or caregiver's main goals, especially for children with challenging behaviours. For information and advice on low-cost products for improving safety in your home visit: Safety Advice for Children and Young People with challenging behaviours
How to make a referral:
- We do not accept referrals for general safety advice and guidance. All parents and carers have a responsibility to carry out safety measures for their own children. Please refer to the information in our Safety information for examples of readily available solutions to meet the need, visit: Safety Advice for Children and Young People with challenging behaviours
- Behavioural and sensory strategies must be implemented before changes to the environment are considered. For more information visit: Home - Wiltshire Children's Community Health Services (wiltshirechildrensservices.co.uk)
