Intensive Travel Training Information

We can help:

• plan with the young person how they will get there and do so as safely as possible
• identify the young person's skills and strengths, then help to develop any new skills needed before they start
• plan for "What if" scenarios
• discuss the risks involved and control measures that can be implemented
• provide an In Case of Emergency (ICE) card (if required)
• support the uptake of Bus/Train passes, ID required
• review progress with the young person and support network
• complete a quality check once independence achieved to ensure the travel route can be safely completed alone

The team apply a person-centred, yet realistic approach, working with the young person to access public transport or safe walking routes. The plan is for this to be done independently.

When we receive the referral the community co-ordinator will be allocated, they will meet the young person and register to service. We will then get to know that person and look at the identified establishment (school or college) and plan with the young person how they will get there.

This travel training will be done in real time on an intensive basis. We support using bespoke 1-1 training and supporting tools/paperwork that uses the recommended advice from the Department of Transport. Including, risk assessments and personal profiling information specific to travel.

We then review our work regularly to ensure that the travel training is sustainable once we fade from support. There will be other responsibilities expected of both the young person and the community co-ordinator, these will be explained and reviewed regularly.

Eligibility

You can be referred for ITT if you:

• have an EHCP
• are accessing an education provision in Wiltshire
• are on Passenger Transport Unit booked transport, taxi or school/college bus
• have SEND booked funded transport
• have been identified from Get Connected sessions
• are motivated and committed to independence
