Using a personal assistant

A PA, or personal assistant, is a person who is employed to support someone to live as independently as possible.

What is a PA?

The role of a personal assistant (PA) is similar to that of a carer. A PA is employed directly by the disabled person, or a member of their family, to help the disabled person live their life as independently as possible. A PA enables the person they are supporting to have choice and control over their life. If you need a lot of support, you can employ more than one PA.

Watch the film 'A PA Life' by Wiltshire CIL and Kandu Arts, which highlights the role of a PA:
