Somewhere to live

To apply for housing through the council, an application through www.homes4wiltshire.co.uk/ (opens new window) will need to be made. Priority giving will depend on individual circumstances. The type of property given i.e. bedrooms will be dependent on need. If you are going to be sharing a tenancy with identified others, then all need to make a housing application with one person as the lead name. Housing will only be offered when support has been assessed and a provider agreed and identified. There is the opportunity to move into existing supported living and the council have a list of possible vacancies to explore. There are opportunities to rent from private landlords and there are companies who will offer support in identifying suitable accommodation.

Social Housing

Social landlords include Wiltshire Council and housing associations. In Wiltshire we have a long waiting list for this type of housing. This list is called the Housing Register.

If you want to discuss joining the Housing Register, you can talk to a housing officer on 0300 456 0106 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

We started with contacting Social Care to request a social worker, they got in touch with us as a family to go through the paperwork..

The Shared Lives Scheme helps you live as part of a family, within their home and you would receive the support and care that you need.

Private rent means renting and paying for your own home and being responsible for your bills (such as electric, gas and water) You can find more detailed information about private renting by visiting: Find a property.

You can use the internet to find a room to rent in a house or a flat. Websites you could visit include:

You can also contact private landlords through estate agents in the high street of each town.

Residential or nursing care services would be considered if you are a young person with very complex needs that require a lot of support.

Supported living means you will live in your own home, either by yourself or with others. If you need it, you can get support to help you with things such as cooking, cleaning, shopping. This support is not guaranteed and may be provided only once an assessment has been completed to see how much/and what support you need. You can find information about supported living by visiting:

You will also be given information and advice about benefits, grants and funding options that are available to support you to live independently. This will include information on the Client Contribution (how much you need to pay towards your care and support).

Telecare will always be explored as an option to meet eligible unmet need rather than paid support. Telecare is support and assistance provided at a distance using information and communication technology.  Telecare offers young people security and peace of mind, through services that enables them to stay independent in their own home. One of the simplest forms of telecare is a pendent. This can be worn around the wrist or around the neck. This can be pressed and will alert a monitoring centre with trained operators staffed 24 hours a day. This will then enable the young person to have a conversation and explain the reasoning for their call.

The switch to digital landlines may affect telecare devices and personal alarms. This process will be gradual and won't be complete until the end of 2025. Your telephone service provider should contact you before the switch takes place. But you may wish to contact the supplier of any telecare devices you use to check if the device will work with the new system or whether any equipment may need to be upgraded.

Having a home is not just about a roof over your head. You should feel safe whether with friends and family, or living alone. You should also have access to the checks and supports you need to know you are safe at home.
